Reading Skim was my first experience with a graphic novel. It was very hard for me to get used to how to read it and what came next in the novel. There are many issues in this novel that are very easy to relate to. I found it hard to believe that this was a children's novel. I do think that it is appropriate for teenagers, which is said to be in the children's section, but I know I would not want anyone under the age of middle school to be reading these things. Issues such as suicide were mentioned. I have known a few people who have been involved with this issue and I do believe it is crucial to be mentioned to children. This book really covers a wide variety of things from the imaginary wick en to serious issues like suicide and inappropriate teacher and student relationships. I really enjoyed this novel and I thought that it was a very fun read. It is a little bizarre but I think that is why i enjoyed it.

I chose this image because we talked a lot about photoshopped pictures with the Dove campaign "Evolution". Although this picture is not nearly photoshopped as much as the one in the Dove commercial there is a big difference in not only the hair but her chest and especially her waist and legs.

This GI Joe Doll goes along with our discussion of just how much the concept of this muscular body has changed over the years and how much emphasis is put on it.

I found this picture and thought it was very interesting. Its a "fat" Barbie. We talked a lot about how Barbie has the dimensions that would not be able to support a woman so I liked this picture because it is trying to prove a point about Barbie.

This image is all about the concept of body image. You can see that this woman is looking into the mirror but the image she is seeing is a completely different person.

This goes a long with our discussion of personal and private writing. I liked this image because it is a locked diary so it represents personal and private writing.

Bold as Love

The meaning changed in these videos because in Jimi Henrix's original version is more of peace and love which is the whole theme of the late 60's in music. Love represented peace and the whole hippie movement and what it was all about. In John Mayer's version is a single/songwriter that directs music at a single person about love. His version was directed at one girl and this changed from peace to romantic love.

The essential differences are the audiences they are targeted at. Hendrix is more targeted at men and not so mainstream where Mayer is more mainstream and girl friendly. John Mayer's version could help him gain the respect and the following of classical rock music fans. It is nice to see present day artists preserving older music.

BJD Book and Movie!

I watched the movie of Bridget Jones's Diary a while ago so I had a good handle on how the book was going to be. With that being said I would have to say that the movie did an excellent job of how the book was written. In class, we talked numerous times about how it is hard to get the concept of a diary to come off in the movie. I believe that they did an excellent job on portraying the diary and cutting out some things in the book. I think that the movie had the same tone that the book was trying to give off as well. The biggest difference that I noticed was that Bridget's weight was severely higher in the movie than in the book. Since I saw the movie first I was expecting the weight fluctuations to not be as drastic and for Bridget to weigh more. The other thing I noticed was Bridget's mom was toned down in the movie compared to in the book. Overall, I believe that the movie was excellent and did a fantastic job of recreating how the book was intended to be.

Comparing GQ and Cosmopolitan

We were asked to compare two articles, one from a men's magazine and one from a woman's magazine. I decided to compare GQ and Cosmopolitan.

Looking through both of theses magazines i couldn't find just one particular article. Some of the articles i focused on in Cosmo are "What He's Dying to Hear During a Date" and "9 Belly Shrinking Foods". These articles are not exactly focusing on the same thing but after you start reading them you can really see some similarities. Both of these articles are focused on how to make men find you more attractive. The first article focuses on what the authors believe that men want to hear on a date and the second article is focusing on becoming thinner and "shrinking" your belly to become more attractive for men.

In GQ I found articles titled, "How to Dump Her Like a Man" and another articled "Undateable". The first article talks about how to break up with a girl like a "man" would. This is a line from the article, * Forget about preserving your status as the sweetest guy on the planet. Don't rob her of the opportunity to hate your fing guts. It focuses on being a man and only thinking about yourself and your own feelings and being a "macho" man. The second article tells guys what not to wear and labels you "undateable" if you do.

Both of these magazines are focusing on the same type of articles. They talk about how to make yourself more appealing to the other sex and how to maintain a good relationship. This teach you how your "supposed" to act and what you should day during dates. Throughout both of these magazines the layout was very similar. They both had many articles on health and making sure to have a fit body for the opposite sex.

Looking through other men and women's magazines as well I think that all of them are very similar and try and guide you to be this unattainable sex appeal for the opposite sex.
